5 biggest trends from New York Fashion Week

Updated

New York Fashion Week is *the* week for celebrity sightings, model-filled parties and epic street style looks, but it's also essential for setting the stage for all the upcoming trends we can look forward to.

And trust us, some of these trends have us wishing we could skip summer (yes!) and head straight into fall. From leopard to feathers to shag coats, here's what was trending at this year's Fashion Week -- these fads are sure to take over come autumn.

1. Leopard

For some people, leopard is a trend solely for fall. For others, leopard isn't just a trend -- it's part of their daily wardrobe. Designers like Nicole Miller, Ulla Johnson, Coach and Zimmerman brought the animal print to the runway this week in a variety of hues and textures.

2. Gemstone Purples

We're used to seeing jewel-toned pieces (maroons, hunter greens) take over the runway for fall, but these purples are relatively new for us. Michael Kors' 70s-inspired show put the hue on our radar, as did Naeem Khan, Tadashi Shoji and Kate Spade.

3. Feathers

Trust us, feathers will become a thing come fall. From small feathered details on dresses à la Prabal Gurung to volumized feathered eveningwear courtesy of Marc Jacobs, these designers proved that adding a little movement to your outfit can never be a bad thing.

4. Copper Tones

Copper is one of these colors that is flattering on everyone. For us, the shade is ubiquitous for fall and was spotted in essentially every single runway show this season. From body suits to work-appropriate blouses, here are the copper-influenced styles we're shopping.

5. Shag Jackets

Many collections this season were influenced by vintage fashion of the 70s. And that means lots of teddy coats and shearling outerwear. These are some of our favorites, from oversized jackets to form-fitting coats.
