Best Bites: Beautiful French macarons

You don't need to fly to Paris for a romantic dessert this Valentine's Day. Celebrate the holiday with these gorgeous and colorful homemade French macarons! Bright and light meringue cookies are mixed with a delightful almond mixture and filled with jam and other fillings. It's so simple to make!

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup almonds

  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar

  • 2 egg whites

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • Food coloring

  • Jam, icing or other filling

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Mix almonds in a food processor until fine.

  3. Add in confectioners' sugar and process for 1 minute.

  4. Pour into a separate bowl and sift mixture.

  5. Whisk egg whites.

  6. Gradually add granulated sugar, increasing speed as you go.

  7. Add in food coloring.

  8. Mix in 30 seconds on high.

  9. Pour in sifted mixture.

  10. Mix, mix, mix with a spatula!

  11. Fold batter over.

  12. Use a pastry bag to pipe batter.

  13. In quarter-sized drops, place batter on baking sheet.

  14. Bake until risen.

  15. Spread filling on each half.

  16. Combine halves together.

  17. Enjoy!
