Dax Shepard reveals why he found working with Netflix so 'liberating'

Updated

Dax Shepard has nothing but good things to say about Netflix.

The actor's first-ever Netflix project, "El Camino Christmas," was released on Friday, Dec. 8, and he told AOL Entertainment that all the hype around the freedom of making projects for the streaming platform is valid. So valid, in fact, that Shepard would be content with working with the company for the rest of his career.

"The movie-making experience was the same as any other, really," Shepard told us at Charmin's pop-up holiday restrooms in Times Square. "But the most amazing part of this was when I went to a screening of this movie three weeks ago, and I saw it and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s really good!’ and I didn’t then go, ‘I wonder how many screens it will be in, I wonder how much money it will make, I wonder what it will open at.’ All of these things that you can’t resist thinking about in the future. It made it weirdly more pure."

"It was like, I liked that script, I acted in it and here it is," he added. "This reminded me why we do this. It took away a lot of the monetization and the stakes of it, which is liberating. You’re not even contemplating what the marketplace will say about it. If I did 100 more Netflix movies, I’d die so happy."

Another force behind Shepard's great experience with "El Camino Christmas" was his fellow cast, which included Vincent D'Onofrio, Jessica Alba, Tim Allen and Kurtwood Smith. And it was Smith who Shepard said was the biggest surprise of the filming process for him.

"I had never worked with Kurtwood Smith, who was the dad on 'That '70's Show,' and he and I -- for whatever reason -- just got along so well," Shepard remembered. "We had most of our scenes together, too. We just had such a lovely time together, and I would say he's a friend now. That was the happy accident of it all. I signed on to it to do scenes with D'Onofrio, and then I discovered Kurtwood in the process."

Though Shepard is welcoming to happy accidents in his life, there's another kind of accident that he's actively trying to help others avoid. Last week, the comedian and his wife Kristen Bell helped Charmin unveil 14 restrooms in the middle of Times Square that will be open to the public this holiday season. As someone with kids, Shepard understands the importance of such a luxury.

"The worst thing in the world is taking your kids to some gnarly bathroom that you wish you could wear a hazmat suit in," he told us with a laugh. "So, as a gift this holiday season, I'm giving 14 themed, clean restrooms to Manhattan. I'm basically a hero."
