Most robots are great at doing the same thing over and over, but the real breakthrough comes when these machines become adaptive and improve their behavior over time, learning and evolving.

This is the case of ''Mother Robot'' a mechanical arm that builds tiny baby robots and observes how they perform so that it can make them better each time.

Fumiya Iida led the research at the University of Cambridge and created the robot that collects information and considers them when creating each ''generation'' of baby robots.

In a press release Dr Fumiya Iida commented:

That's essentially what this robot is doing ... we can actually watch the improvement and diversification of the species."
