Twitter is melting down over Confederate flag in Ivanka Trump's holiday photos

Updated

Ivanka Trump took to Twitter to share some highlights of her husband and son's fishing trip on Tuesday.

The first daughter tweeted four photos of husband Jared Kushner and their son, Joseph, fishing on a boat at an undisclosed location. In one of the images, Kushner holds up a fish. Trump's caption read: "To any kid, this fish is a trophy!"

The series of photos were seemingly intended to simply document the family's outing, but it wasn't long before people spotted something lurking in the background of one of the photos: a Confederate flag.

Here is a closer look at the flag behind Kushner's shoulder.

"Nice confederate flag in the background. Playing to their racist base, I see," one person tweeted, while another wrote: "You might want take a closer look at your photos before posting. Husband showing his true colors Ivanka..."

Other users argued, however, that it was unfair for the first daughter to be criticized for the flag as it wasn't on her family's boat, one person tweeted: "Do you hold yourself accountable for the actions of the person driving next to you? If not, you’re a hypocrite."

As The Daily Dot noted, "the Confederate flag flying in the background of a family photo might not be the best optics" given the continued fallout over the president's decision to blame "both sides" in the wake of the violent rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August.

However, former Office of Government Ethics director Walter Shaub tweeted after the first daughter’s apparent flub that controversial detail was either a "dog whistle" or an accident.
