Melania Trump's most noteworthy moments of 2017

Updated

President Donald Trump's first year in office has been full of transitions for the president and his family -- especially first lady Melania Trump.

From uprooting her life in New York City and moving to the nation's capital to decking the halls of the White House for her first Christmas decorating-extravaganza, the first lady's year included a number of firsts and a deluge of press attention.

Every face the first lady made and interaction she had with her husband made headlines, starting with a "scowl" on Inauguration Day that was seen around the world and set the tone for how she would be covered by many press outlets throughout the year.

During the inauguration, a video of Melania Trump looking "petrified" at the ceremony made rounds on social media and prompted Twitter to light up with the hashtag #FreeMelania. In the clip the first lady could be seen smiling at her husband during the event, only to drop the grin suddenly as he looks away. The hashtag would follow her throughout the entire year.

She found herself thrust back into the public eye again after her husband's ex-wife, Ivana Trump claimed she played the role of first lady in the president's life while promoting her new memoir, “Raising Trump."

Ivana Trump told ABC News that she and the president were on such good terms that she had a "direct number" to the White House and explicitly said, "I'm basically first Trump wife. OK? I'm first lady." Melania Trump responded to Ivana Trump in a statement after the interview, saying: "She loves living in Washington, D.C. and is honored by her role as First Lady of the United States. There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex, this is unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise."
