Bob Dole wants Richard Nixon back in Washington

Former Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole recently wrote an op-ed for Politico magazine, titled, "Washington Could Use A Man Like Nixon Again."

In the piece, Dole reflects that, 23 years ago, he delivered a eulogy for former President Richard Nixon whom he called "an American hero."

Dole writes, "I predicted on that rain-soaked afternoon that the second half of the 20th century would be known as the Age of Nixon. Today, I can say with confidence that the beginning of the 21st century is still the Age of Nixon..."

Bob Dole through the years

He continues, "...we're still living in a world he played a role in shaping. Though our country has changed in many ways in the 43 years since Nixon's resignation and 23 years since his death, the basic domestic policies and international order that he brought to fruition remain in place."

Dole then talked about Nixon's foreign policy successes with China and by ending the Vietnam War in addition to his domestic achievements including Title IX for gender equality in education, desegregation, and welfare reform among others.

According to a New York Times report from 1996, Dole and Nixon began crossing political paths in 1960 and developed a relationship based, in part, on modest, self-made backgrounds.

However, Dole has maintained that he was not in any way involved with the Watergate scandal that led to Nixon's resignation.

Interestingly, a recent New Yorker report on President Trump's controversial adviser Roger Stone says that "In his heart, Stone is a Richard Nixon man. More to the point, so is Trump."
