Kellyanne Conway apologized to President Trump after commenting on Ivanka's clothing line

Updated

Senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway reportedly apologized to the president on Thursday, after she commented on Ivanka Trump's clothing line during a live TV interview.

A senior administration official says the president expressed to Conway that he backs her up "completely," according to a CNN report.

Conway tweeted on Friday of the president's support for her.

The president also "hated" the word "counseled" -- which press secretary Sean Spicer used to describe what occurred in the aftermath of Conway's remarks, according to the White House official.

In a Thursday Fox News interview, the former campaign manager told viewers to "go buy Ivanka's stuff."

"Go buy Ivanka's stuff, is what I would tell you," Conway said. "It's a wonderful line. I own some of it. I fully -- I'm going to just, I'm going to give a free commercial here: Go buy it today, everybody. You can find it online."

Conway received a bipartisan blow in response to her comments, and some ethics experts are concerned the remarks could be unlawful.

According to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, her 'free commercial' is a violation of federal law prohibiting public officials from using their office for their own private gain or the private gain of others. "Others," they say, includes the president's daughter -- Ivanka Trump.

Ethics experts also warn that these remarks could mark a shift in White House attitude where the president could use his power to steer money.

Members of both parties called for an official review from a government watchdog of the comments.
