Sources claim Newt Gringrich the 'likely pick' to be Trump VP

Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trumpsaid Wednesday he was "looking at 10 people" as potential vice presidential picks -- but it appears he's eyeing one in particular.

Sources close to the Trump campaign told NJ.com Thursday afternoon that former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is "the likely pick" to be the billionaire's running mate.

This comes a day after two other rumored candidates for the position, including early favorite Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker and Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst, removed their names from the running.

Gingrich has been willing to criticize Trump in the past, just last month calling his remarks about the judge presiding over the Trump University civil fraud case "inexcusable."

However, Gingrich has become an increasingly important part of the mogul's inner circle. The former speaker joined Trump at a rally in Ohio on Wednesday, in what one person involved in the event told the National Review was "a 'trial balloon' to gauge media coverage of the pair as a potential GOP ticket."

If Gingrich were to join the ticket and win, he would be the oldest newly inaugurated VP in history at 73 years old. Trump would also be the oldest every commander-in-chief at 70 years old.

Outside of Gingrich, a more unconventional pick has been gaining momentum. Both the tycoon's son, Eric, and Sen. Corker have identified Ivanka Trump as an option.

It's anticipated that Ivanka Trump will play a major role at the Republican National Convention later in July, where she is expected to be slotted for a prime speaking appearance.
