This DIY aromatherapy blend is perfect for Meghan Markle -- and other new moms

Updated

The world watched as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry introduced their 7-pound new bundle of joy to the world, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. While the couple has chosen to remain incredibly private on details of their son's arrival, reports allege that Meghan, despite her preference for an all-natural home birth, actually gave birth at a private hospital in Portland.

Meghan and Archie are at home recuperating, with the baby sleeping in an all-natural, eco-friendly nursery complete with vegan paint. We can only imagine how Meghan may be resting -- given her inclination towards natural foods, yoga and essential oils, it may involve some holistic R & R.

"With Mother’s Day around the corner, there’s no better time to talk about post-natal care," explained Heloisa Melo, lead spa therapist at The SPA at Auberge Beach in Fort Lauderdale. "New moms are adjusting to a new life with sleep deprivation and plenty of hormonal adjustments which is why it’s important to take the time to rebalance."

We caught up with Melo about how Meghan and other new mothers may benefit from essential oils, and how they can make their own aromatherapy blend at home.

Melo suggests five different oils to help the hormones of new mothers stabilize. "Lavender essential oil is famous for its floral relaxing benefits," explained the spa therapist to AOL Lifestyle. "It relaxes the body at all levels. Especially for emotional stress due to being a new mommy."

She also recommends ylang-ylang, derived from a yellow flower in Asia, because it possesses "anti-depressant and aphrodisiac qualities," as well as geranium essential oils to help "balance the female hormonal qualities... and combat post-natal depression." Melo also suggests orange essential oil, packed with Vitamin C, because it contains a plethora of anti-depressant benefits and grapeseed oil to revitalize the "skin's integrity."

Mix in 1 oz of grapeseed oil, 2 drops of ylang-ylang, 4 drops of lavender, 3 drops of orange and 1 drop of germanium mixed in an amber glass bottle and voilà, you've just created a spa-quality essential blend that can help new moms recuperate following the stress of giving birth.
