What is the theme of the 2019 Met Gala?

Updated

Met Gala Monday is almost here!

This year's "Oscars of Fashion" will take place on May 6th and will be attended by Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra and Lupita Nyong'o, all of whom make up part of the extravaganza's host committee. Harry Styles, Lady Gaga and Serena Williams will round out the Hollywood-heavy event as the hosts, alongside Anna Wintour and Gucci's Alessandro Michele.

And while the Gala may be known for its familiar faces, its theme is known to be a little more obscure. We've seen everything from "Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century" to "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" in the past, leaving celebrities and their designer escorts to interpret Wintour's vision and take it to the red carpet.

Next up for 2019? "Camp: Notes on Fashion," which was announced in mid-October.

Apparently, the Met Gala planning committee does not mean a dress code of hiking boots and Color War T-shirts at an event where an invite costs as much as $30,000 and approval from Anna Wintour herself.

Instead, this year's theme stems from writer Susan Sontag's 1964 essay Notes on Camp.

"We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures," explained Andrew Bolton, curator behind the Costume Institute, according to The New York Times.

How will this be understood by Hollywood? We'll just have to wait a few more days to find out.
