Donald Trump's connection to the Met Gala might surprise you

The first Monday in May is practically a holiday in New York City -- it's the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute benefit, aka the Met Gala.

Hosted by Conde Nast's artistic director and Vogue's Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour, the ball is the museum's largest fundraising effort of the year and kicks off the museum's newest exhibit in the costume department.

Ever since Wintour took the reigns in the late 1990s, the ball has turned into fashion's biggest night out, attended by the industry's A-list and the whos-who of Hollywood. Known best for the most outlandish outfits on the red carpet that typically coordinate with the new exhibit, this year's theme is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

What you might not know about the star-studded and extremely extravagant event is that President Donald Trump actually proposed to his third wife, Melania, at the event back in 2004. The 10 plus carat engagement ring Melanie received reportedly retailed for $1.5 million.

While President Trump used to regularly attend the Met Gala before he entered the political world, as a reality TV host and businessman, you shouldn't expect to see him at this year's soirée. In October of 2017, Wintour was on James Corden's 'The Late Late Show' when she was asked who she would never invite back to the Met Gala. Without hesitation, Donald Trump was her answer.
