Here's what you need to know about the Met Gala's 2018 theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

The Oscars of Fashion is under a week a way, so here's everything we know about the Met Gala's theme this year. Hosted by Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace, this year's gala will center around "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

Wait, what? The Met Gala is no stranger to strange themes, but it's hard to predict how this year's subject would come together.

Even Twitter was thoroughly confused.

Those were our initial thoughts, but then we remembered just how rooted religion is in the history of fashion. Explained Vogue, curator of the gala Andrew Bolton will aim " to show how “material Christianity” has helped form “the Catholic imagination.”

Vogue, integral to the Gala's execution, sites that pieces of the coming exhibition will include a papal garb borrowed from the Sistine Chapel -- never before seen outside of the Vatican -- and pieces from famed designer Coco Chanel, who was educated by nuns.

Other much-anticipated creations include a Chanel wedding gown inspired by a communion dress, a Dolce & Gabbana mosaic creation and Valentino masterpieces inspired by monk robes. Consisting of 150 garments, the exhibition will be the largest ever, and possibly the most "controversial." The displays will be featured across three different galleries: the Cloisters, the Met and the Anna Wintour Costume Center.

"The focus is on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology. Beauty has often been a bridge between believers and unbelievers,” explained Bolton to the New York Times.
