Busy Philipps on her favorite workout, her late night gig and finding a balance

2018 was a massive year for Busy Philipps.

From launching her book, "This Will Only Hurt a Little," to debuting "Busy Tonight," her late night talk show, the mother of two ended last year on a high note that is only continuing into 2019. We sat down with the actress slash host to hear about what she is most looking forward to this year and to get details on her latest collaboration with Kellogg's.

AOL: You recently teamed up with Kellogg to get the word out about their new cereal HI! Happy Inside. How did this partnership come about?

Busy Philipps: Kellogg's reached out to me saying, “we have this new cereal HI! Happy Inside. It’s for digestive wellness and it's got this new three-in-one thing, prebiotics in addition to probiotics and fiber, so that you can really start feeling good inside and everything's working." And, you know, lots of brands reach out to me and I almost always say the exact same thing which is, "Sure, send it over. I'll try it. " And I did and truly loved it. I loved the taste of it, it's delicious, and it delivered on the promise of making me feel good on the inside.

Do you have a favorite workout routine or class?

I love my trampoline workout, my LEKFit workout, which I do daily, and I like it because I get an intense cardio workout but it's low impact. I have a lot of knee joint issues and early onset arthritis in one of my knees, so I've just found that that's the best workout for me. I'm able to get a full sweat, high intensity cardio workout, but not high impact.

What are your go-to healthy snacks for when you and your family are on the go?

I use HI! Happy Inside as a healthy snack. I'm a big fan of cereal in the afternoon. I do enjoy the single servings [of the cereal] for being on the go. Other healthy snacks like fruit, vegetables, cut up vegetables with hummus or tahini are easy to take on the go.

What is the one thing you can't help but to indulge in? Is there anything?

I sort of rail against the idea of or labeling things as indulgences or treats. You should be able to find enough balance in your life so you don’t put those kind of "good" and "bad" labels [on things] and "Oh, I'm being so bad by having nachos." If you want to have nachos, have nachos! You don’t have to have them every day for every meal but it's okay. I just think it's really about finding and maintaining a balance and being aware, being cognizant of the things you're putting in your body. It all comes out in the wash.

Last fall, "Busy Tonight" premiered on E!. What has been the biggest lesson or thing that you've learned so far?

I try to put a lot of thought into every single episode. We have a one guest, generally speaking, per show, so I try to put a lot of thought -- and I talk to my producers -- about what we should talk about with this person. What interests us? What do we want to know? Has this person talked about these things on other shows?

I read all the research they pull on our guests and I find things in articles that interest me and that I want to know more about as opposed to just being told, "This is the story, here is the punchline, go." And I try to really listen to the person sitting across from me. I'm trying to stay very in the moment in the interview at this point and just be very comfortable so [the guest is] comfortable. And if they say something that sparks another question that we hadn't talked about, just going for it and asking them because it's just a conversation. And yes, we all have a goal, they want to promote whatever they're coming on to promote and I want people to watch my show, so we want to make it interesting and maybe something that gets picked up by a news outlet, but ultimately my goal is not to make anyone feel like I'm trying to "get" them.

You have a very busy 2018. What are you most looking forward to in 2019?

I'm looking forward to a lot of things in 2019. Selling the show and developing it and kicking it off was a huge deal, but it's a work in progress and I think anyone who has ever worked in the late night space will tell you that. I know they have to, but to review my first show seems unfair to me because you're not going to come out with a finished product on night one. And it has just been a real learning curve and I think we've been really good at adjusting along the way.

I have an incredible partnership with Tina Fey and Caissie St. Onge, who's my show runner, and E! themselves. So I think that I'm most excited, in the first part of this year really, to continue to make my show even more of me and more of what I want to put out into the world.

The interview has been edited and condensed.
