Met Gala 2018: The most outrageous headpieces

This year's Met Gala theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," and the ball's famous red carpet did not disappoint. From Sarah Jessica Parker dripping in gold to very creative makeup looks to Katy Perry showing up in massive angel wings, there was a show stopping outfit everywhere you looked.

But the one accessory that we saw on just about everyone throughout the night was some sort of decorative headpiece.

While crowns and halos were definitely in the majority, we also saw extravagant veils (looking at you, Kate Bosworth) as well as delicate headbands.

Our favorite headpieces of the night included Rita Ora's black floral headpiece, Lily Collins' modern take on a halo and Blake Lively's angelic gold headpiece. And what would the Met Gala have been without Rihanna really going all out for the theme and arriving in a very Pope-inspired ensemble completed with an ornate mitre?

See all of the most memorable headpieces from this year's Met Gala in the gallery above, and rock your own version of a fun headpiece with a few of our favorite headbands below!

Karlie Kloss in Brandon Maxwell

Celebrity Hairstylist Harry Josh worked with Karlie Kloss on her look using the Harry Josh Pro Tools collection.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how to recreate Karlie's look:

Step 1: Harry applied a thickening tonic to wet hair to give hair volume and added Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to the ends as a thermal protector before blowing hair out.

Step 2: Next, using the Harry Josh Pro Tools Ultra Light Pro Dryer and Harry Josh Pro Tools Round Brush in 2.5 Inch to blow the Mohawk portion of the hair out. Then, Velcro rollers were applied to the crown of Karlie’s hair to give extra volume.

Step 3: After, Harry used the Harry Josh Pro Tools Carbon Tail Comb to create a center part. Harry then, used the Harry Josh Pro Tools Premium Oval Brush to blow out the rest of the hair. To give hair extra texture, Harry applied a light amount of Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.

Step 4: Then, Kloss’ hair was fastened into a low ponytail before applying the Serge Normant Meta Sheet Dry Oil Finishing Spray onto the ponytail. Harry then pulled hair into two pieces and twisted them in opposite directions to create a bun that was secured with hair pins.

Step 5: To finish the look Harry added two gardenia’s to the hair using bobby pins before applying the Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hair Spray to lock in the look.

Priyanka Chopra

The actress worked with celebrity hair stylist Bok-Hee to achieve her look. Here's a step-by-step guide on recreating it for yourself:

Step 1: I like to start with freshly washed hair. We used the new Pantene Pro-V Micellar Shampoo & Conditioner because it uses micelles to gently clean hair while protecting its natural, essential nutrients. It’s like a gentle magnet taking out the bad while leaving the good!

Step 2: Before hair dries layer it with Pantene Pro-V Smoothing Combing Crème to refresh and reboot each strand. Comb through with fingers.

Step 3: Apply Pantene Pro-V Airspray as a styling agent to allow the hair to stay in place but keep a natural and flexible hold without looking stiff or sticky.

Step 4: Blow dry hair with a brush or your hands. Once hair is dry, smooth hair out with a large barrel iron.

Step 5: At front of hair, spray with Pantene Maximum Hold Hairspray Level 4 Hold to prep for the finishing touches. After spraying, create the fingerwaves on each side of the center part using a 1/2-3/4” barrel curling iron. Add more hairspray to lock in the hold.

Step 6: Gather the remaining hair in the back into a tight chignon. Add accessories as you see fit!

Jennifer Lopez

Celebrity Makeup Artist Scott Barnes worked with Jennifer Lopez for her look on the Met Gala Red Carpet using the Jennifer Lopez Inglot Collection.

For Jennifer’s neutral eye look, Scott used the Freedom System Eye Shadow in Café Au Lait and layered Pure Pigment Eyeshadow in Cosmic Glow on top. He defined her brows with Brow Liner Gel in Taupe and finished her eyes with a lash defining swipe of Viva Las Lashes Mascara.

To show off her cheekbones, Scott used the Freedom System HD Sculpting Powder in Cocoa 1 and Freedom System Blush in Blush on the apples of her cheeks. For an added bit of shimmer, he applied Freedom System HD Pressed Powder in  Nude 1.

For Jennifer’s sexy nude lip, Scott layered Lipstick in Flor and Lipglossy Lip Gloss in Burnt Sienna.

For her hair, celeb stylist Lorenzo Martin worked with Matrix:

To give hair a wet but voluminous look, use Matrix Style Link Volume Builder Mousse applying it roots to end while hair is damp.

1. Blow dry hair and use flat iron hair for a sleek look. Use a tail comb to create a severe side part.

2. Using Matrix Style Link Super Fixer Strong Hold Hair Gel, tuck hair back behind the ears and apply gel throughout the top of head for added shine.

3. For a final touch, spray Matrix Style Link Style Fixer Finishing Hair Spray for lasting hold and shine with an ultra-dry finish, staying fabulous all night!

Celebrity Makeup Artist, Dana Delaney created Solange's look using Burt’s Bees. Here's a step-by-step guide on how she achieved this look:

Step 1: Face: Delaney began the makeup application by applying the Burt’s Bees Goodness Glows Liquid Makeup in Pecan and Chestnut, blending the Pecan shade through the center of her face and lightly contouring with the Chestnut shade along the outer face and cheekbones. She then applied the Burt’s Bees Mattifying Powder Foundation in Almond, blending in the center of her face to control any shine.

Step 2: Eyes: She then applied the Burt’s Bees Nourishing Eyeliner Pencil in Black, smudging the product right in the lash line and blending up towards the lid.

Step 3: Lips: Delany prepped Lea’s lips using the new Burt’s Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub. She then applied the new Burt’s Bees Liquid Lipstick in Niagara Nude and Sandy Seas. She topped off the look by lightly tapping in the center of her lip and gently patting the product through her cheekbones, giving her a subtle highlight.

Olivia Munn

Olivia sported essie's gel couture "Model Clicks" to match her bold lip.

Explained celeb makeup artist Carly Fisher, "Olivia’s dress conveyed both strength and femininity so I therefore chose a bold, strong lip look, as I feel a woman in a bold lip exudes both qualities.”

Here's how:

I first applied BUXOM Cosmetics Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation with a kabuki brush to both the face and neck. Using a Beauty Blender, I pressed the excess foundation into skin to ensure an even application of product. For the perfect sun-kissed color that flatters all skin tones, I used a fluffy angled brush to sweep BUXOM Cosmetics Hot Escapes Bronzer over the face, starting from above the ear following the hollows of cheek bones, stopping at eye length. I then applied around her hair line, as well as the lower jaw line to enhance bone structure. I switched to a flat shading brush to contour her nose, starting at the hollows of the eye down to the tip of the nose. To create a dewy and fresh skin look, I uniquely used BUXOM Cosmetics PowerPlump Lip Balm in shade Fiery as a blush by applying it with a fluffy brush and using dabbing motions. Using this creamy lip product gave her color without adding heavy product. To further create a natural glow, I next applied BUXOM Cosmetics Divine Goddess Luminizer to highlight the high points of her face using a small Beauty Blender.

I created Olivia’s eye look by making my own BUXOM Cosmetics Customizable Eyeshadow Palette. I started off by using the shade Feather Boa with a large crease brush, sweeping the product in windshield wiper motions to enhance her natural crease. I then used the shade Filthy Rich with a smaller crease brush to define and darken her crease. Lastly, with a flat synthetic brush, I created a sheen using the shade Diamond Darling. The shadows have a powerfully-pigmented formula that easily glide onto lids with a luxe, powder-to-silk feel. For a more lived in natural lash I used BUXOM Cosmetics Big Tease Plumping Mascara to achieve maximum volume and length.

To create her bold and sexy lip look, I first applied BUXOM Cosmetics PlumpLine Lip Liner in shade Mystery to outline the perfect pout. I then used BUXOM Cosmetics Big & Sexy Bold Gel Lipstick in shade Voodoo Spice with a synthetic lip brush to fill in the lips. For a glossy touch I added BUXOM Cosmetics Va-Va-Plump Shiny Liquid Lipstick in shade Stay The Night. The plumping, high-shine formula gives off intense color with serious staying power.”

Here's how to get Olivia's hair with the help of hair stylist Chad Wood.

1. Generously spray Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray on damp hair to prep for a smooth blowout.

2. Spray Kenra Platinum Luxe One Leave-In to hair tips to create a sleek finish before heat is applied.

3. Section out the hair into 4-5 small rectangle-shaped sections, working your way up from the nape of the neck.

4. Apply Kenra Platinum Dry Texture Spray to hair roots for added volume.

5. Take one-inch sections and lightly spray Kenra Volume Spray 25 for a tousled texture.

6. Use a flat-iron in “S”-shaped movements, working your way from the hair tips to the top of your head. To create the S-shape, simply rock your hand back and forth, creating subtle movement in the hair.

7. Spray the entire head with Kenra Volume Spray 25 to ensure the look stays intact.

Step 1: Begin by prepping damp hair with TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray from roots to ends and comb through for even distribution. This will maximize styling results and protect hair from damage.

Step 2: Apply a quarter size amount of TRESemmé Thick & Full Balm from roots to mid shaft before blow drying with a medium-sized round brush for maximum volume.

Step 3: Next, take two-inch sections of hair and lightly spray with TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 1: Texture and lightly tease each section for volume.

Step 4: Pull hair into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic leaving fullness in the crown of the head.

Step 5: Start to fishtail braid the ponytail until you get halfway down and then secure with an elastic leaving the rest of the tail out.

Step 6: Mist the TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 4: Extend all over for hold and style without stiffness.

Step 7: Lastly, use two different size headbands to finish the look.

Mindy Kaling

This is Mindy’s moment -- her crown and dress are couture Vassilis Zoulias and we had two fittings just for the crown!" explained Marc Mena, her hairstylist.

1. To start, I prepped Mindy’s hair with Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse ($4.88) and blew it out to create smoothness, but with a bit volume and hold at the root. Mindy’s hair is naturally curly, but we wanted to keep it as close to the 1950s with limited hot tools – just a great, bouncy blowout (however I don’t think they had my secret weapon, Dove Dry Shampoo, back then!!)

2. Once the hair was dry, I sprayed Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($4.88) at her roots, holding the can 6 inches away so it expands throughout the hair evenly. Once that was done, I began prepping for the crown by backcombing 1” sections of her hair and spraying each section with more Dove Dry Shampoo to create a textured base to hold the unbelievable, handmade crown. After taking one look at that crown, I knew that Dove Dry Shampoo would be my best friend tonight!

3. I then brushed her hair into a smooth, low pony with a Mason Pearson brush and lots of Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro-Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.88). I instantly felt relieved to see the texture and hold at the root, which would be key to placing the crown!

4. Because I wanted her chignon to be a little more dramatic, I added a hairpiece into her ponytail and braided it into one long Rapunzel braid. Marc’s Tip: Spray Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro-Mist Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.88) on your natural hair and the hairpiece to help marry & blend the two.

5. Once the braid was complete, I began wrapping the braid upwards and pinning it into a pinwheel shape. This is a classic 1950’s style – chic, but not fussy! Less was more here since she has a beautiful crown coming, but I wanted the hair to be the perfect accessory for the headpiece.

6. Now – the main event! I resprayed Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($4.88) at the top of her head to create one final blast of texture and placed the crown. During the fitting, I worked with the designer to find the best way to secure the crown and we decided on creating small holes on the perimeter of the headpiece so that I could easily crisscross bobby pins and secure on Mindy’s head. She could do a cartwheel tonight – that crown isn’t going anywhere!

7. Lastly, I did one final spray of Dove Style+Care Compressed Micro-Mist Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.88) and Mindy was off! A beautiful, classic look fit for a queen.

Amal Clooney

Her complexion was achieved using Charlotte Tilbury productsHere's how:

Step 1. Charlotte began by cleansing Amal’s skin with her Multi-Miracle Glow. She followed this with her Goddess Skin Clay Mask, and then her award-winning Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask for red carpet-ready skin in just 15 minutes!

Step 2. Charlotte then applied her best-selling Charlotte’s Magic Cream to moisturize and create the perfect canvas.

Step 3. Next, Charlotte applied her Wonderglow primer to give the skin a glowing, lit-from-within base.

Step 4. She then applied her famous Light Wonder Foundation in shades 6 and 7 all over the face, which she followed by dotting her Hollywood Flawless Filter in shade 2 along the cheekbones and high points of the face to create a superstar lit Hollywood glow.

Step 5. To polish Amal’s complexion makeup, Charlotte used her Airbrush Flawless Finish powder in shades 1 and 2, and then applied her Filmstar Bronze & Glow, and Pretty Youth Glow Filter in Pretty Fresh to the cheeks to lightly contour and add a pop of pink to round out the look.

Gisele Bundchen

Here's how Hung Vannago got Gisele's glow:

“To start, I cleansed Gisele’s skin with Kiehl’s Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, then exfoliated the skin with Kiehl’s Pineapple Papaya Facial Scrub. I rinsed well, towel dried, then give the skin an extra hydration boost by applying Kiehl’s Calendula & Aloe Soothing Hydration Mask for 5 minutes. I rinsed well then, then appliedKiehl’s Calendula Herbal Extract Alcohol-Free TonerCreamy Eye Treatment with AvocadoUltra Facial Cream, and Lip Balm #1."

Lily Aldridge

Said Quinn Murphy, her makeup stylist, "The look was clean and classic, with a slight nod to Sophia Loren’s infamous cat eye.”

Here's how:

I created a fresh and simple skin look by using BUXOM Cosmetics Show Some Skin Weightless Foundation in shades Sweet As Honey and Almond The Nude. The skin-pampering formula hydrates, brightens, and smooths skin. To perfect the skin with a natural glow, I applied BUXOM Cosmetics Hot Escapes Bronzer in shade Maldives all over the face. To keep cheeks dewy and fresh, I added BUXOM Cosmetics PowerPlump Lip Balm in shade Glowing as a blush.

I next moved on to the main focus of this look, which was the black liner on her eyes. I first used BUXOM Cosmetics Hold The Line Waterproof Eyeliner in shade Call Me to create the cat eye shape I wanted. Next, I went over it with the NEW BUXOM Cosmetics SexySmoky Kajal Powder Liner in shade Sultry Black. This wet liner has an intense pigment with lasting wear and a tapered sponge tip applicator to create a smoky, precise line. To intensify the look I applied BUXOM Cosmetics Lash Mascara, the clump-resistant formula deepens, darkens and thickens lashes.

For a beautiful warm nude lip, I used BUXOM Cosmetics Big & Sexy Bold Gel Lipstick in shade Nude Exposure. The weightless and comfortable gel formula adds vivid color with a satin finish.”

Moroccanoil Celebrity Hairstylist Bryce Scarlett was also responsible for Lily's hair. Here's how he achieved her look:

  • On damp hair, use a dime size amount of Moroccanoil Treatment to provide the perfect foundation for styling.
  • Using Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray, mist evenly throughout mid-lengths and ends to protect and detangle hair. Comb to distribute.
  • At the roots, work in Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse and comb fingers through for added body.
  • Blow dry the hair smooth using Moroccanoil Ceramic 45MM Round Brush and Moroccanoil Professional Ceramic Hair Dryer starting at the roots and lifting away from the scalp.
  • Blow dry the bangs forward and set them into a curl. Then, part in the center and tuck behind the ears to frame the face.
  • Spray Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray to create textured volume near the root of the hair and pull into a ponytail with height at the crown. Wrap the hair into a chignon and spray the bangs with Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray.
  • Finish the look with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium to provide a long-lasting, weightless hold.

Gabrielle Union

Get Gabrielle's glow at home with the help of Mario Dedivanovic.

1. We began prepping Gabrielle’s skin last night. I gave her Kiehl’s Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Overnight Mask to sleep in the night before, so she woke up with smooth, partially prepped skin.

2. First, I primed her skin with a serum, applying Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate all over her face. I prepared her eyes for makeup by dotting Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado around and under her eyes, and then fully moisturized her face and neck with Kiehl’s new Glow Formula Skin Hydrator, adding both hydration and instant radiance.

3.  Finally, I applied Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 to prep Gabrielle’s lips while I began her makeup. Gabrielle wore Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation in both shades 10 and 11 to create a flawless looking base.

4. Then, to achieve the ultimate glow, I applied Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter in shade 5 to the cheekbones, chin and bridge of the nose and blended to give her a soft-focus starlit glow. Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter complexion booster paired with Kiehl’s new Glow Formula Skin Hydratorgave Gabrielle the most gorgeous dewy, natural looking finish. She had an otherworldly glow, it was next level.

5. I then applied Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Contour Wand in Medium/Dark to the forehead, jawline, and the hollows of the cheeks for subtle definition, followed with Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Beauty Light Wand along the cheekbones for an extra pop of luminosity. I then finished with a quick swipe of Charlotte Tilbury’s NEW Pretty Youth Glow Filter in Seduce Blush (Available 5/31). The cream-to-powder formula gave her a fresh looking, instant flush.

Zendaya

Zendaya’s look was inspired by the power of Joan of Arc and the opulence of Versace, who dressed her this evening. The gown references armor and chainmail, so we knew we needed a strong beauty look as well," explained celeb hairstylist Ursula Stephen.

1. To get the look, I prepped Zendaya’s natural hair with Suave Professionals Avocado & Olive Oil Smoothing Leave-In Conditioning Cream ($3.99) before blowing it straight with myInstyler TURBO Ionic Dryer ($99.99).

2. To achieve the wavy, chopped bob with short, severe bangs, I liberally sprayed the hair with Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray for pieceyness, and scrunched in Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse ($3.99) for added shine to encourage a wavy, wet look.

3. I locked everything in place by diffusing with the Instyler TURBO Ionic Dryer ($99.99) and spraying her hair liberally with the TRESemmé Compressed Micro-Mist Hair Spray Hold Level 1: Texture ($4.99).”

Emilia Clarke

“Playing off Emilia’s black Dolce & Gabbana dress, I wanted to create something with her hair that would give her effortless, soft texture. With a loose braid in the back pinned messily, she looked like a fairy-tale princess. The look was elegant but still super sexy.” - explained by hairstylist Ben Skervin for Suave Professionals.

Laura Harrier

Here's how lead Stylist Teddi Cranford of ApotheCARE Essentials achieved Laura's look.

Step 1. I had her prep hair with ApotheCARE Essentials The Booster Shampoo & Conditioner for supreme volume.

Step 2. Then I brushed her strands out with a Mason Pearson brush and added Oribe Grandiose Plumping Mousse at the crown followed by ApotheCARE Essentials The Mender Hair Oil to her wet ends. Make sure you spread the oil evenly so you don’t weight it down, and you’ll have perfectly soft curls.

Step 3. After blow-drying into the shape, I curled her ends with a 1” barrel and pinned up the hair all around her head to set into rich waves.

Step 4. After about 15 mins, I combed her hair out with my Y S Park Tail Comb and teased the crown. I pinned a few strands right at the back to seal the deal with some extra ‘60s volume.

Step 5. To finish the look off, we sprayed a ton of fine mist hairspray to make sure the look lasts all night long!
