Amal Clooney stuns in first Vogue cover for the May 2018 issue

Updated

Amal Clooney is Vogue's newest cover star!

The human rights lawyer -- and boss of street style, IMHO -- took the cover of the iconic magazine for its May 2018 issue. A position that's frequently reserved for famous artists or first ladies, the opportunity indicates a radical change for the publisher -- it's a watershed that editor Anna Wintour took to her May letter to explain.

"One of the many conversations we’ve been having at Vogue lately is about who exactly should be gracing our covers given the radically changed world we now live in," Wintour began. "We’ve always taken the position that the women we feature should have substance to them, something that has only taken on greater urgency in the last year or so."

Enter Mrs. Clooney:

That’s why I’m delighted that Amal Clooney, a force to be reckoned with in the realms of international law and human rights, agreed to appear on our May cover. Amal needs no introduction, of course—yet for someone who’s in the spotlight so much, she rarely engages with her fame. It’s as if she has negotiated a life for herself that can somehow happily accommodate being married to a very famous movie star without ever having to sacrifice her passionate attachment to her long and illustrious career as a barrister...

Aside from her extreme recognition as a lawyer, the 40-year-old mom of two has also been making a name for herself in the fashion world -- and her cover on the magazine proves just that. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz at her home in Sonning, England, Amal takes the cover in a pink Alexander McQueen top and pink embellished Cartier earrings.

The rest of Leibovitz's stunning photos include working mom Amal reading up on some cases, snapshots of her intense barrister uniform and a strut in a polka dot Johanna Ortiz dress. She looks glamorous as ever, and though she's rarely been spotted minus her commute to her office at Columbia University School of Law, we know for sure we'll be seeing Amal and husband George Clooney take the red carpet come the annual Met Gala in May.

Along with Donatella Versace and Rihanna, Amal is one of this year's co-hosts.

Explained Wintour, "The exhibition itself has been years in the making, and it will be not only the largest Costume Institute show to date but the biggest show ever at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s hard to not sound hyperbolic about it, but it is going to be an absolutely magnificent experience."
