Meghan Markle's pronunciation of 'scone' is dividing the internet

Meghan Markle has unintentionally started the great scone debate of 2018.

Prince Harry's bride-to-be stepped out in Edinburgh the day before Valentine's Day. While the former "Suits" star garnered attention for her rule-breaking ensemble -- a Burberry tartan coat, Veronica Beard trousers and a Strathberry crossbody bag -- it was her pronunciation of one word that had the internet going wild.

A royal fan in the crowd, Carolyn Chisholm, gave the future duchess some heart-shaped potato scones from the bakery she runs with her husband.

"I just thought for Valentine’s the scones were a wee gift of Scottishness, " Chisholm said. Chisolm's mother, however, took offense to one thing -- "[Meghan] gave them to her aide, saying they were 'scones,'" said Lynda Clark, 70, noting that Meghan pronounced the word with a short "o," to rhyme with "gone."

She continued: "The correct pronunciation is 'scone'" said with a long "o," to rhyme with bone.

Social media, of course, reacted to the controversy:

According to a 2016 poll, 51 percent of Brits actually pronounced the word to sound like "gone" and 42 percent to sound like "bone." It's also a possibility that Meghan was speaking like a Canadian. The actress moved to Toronto in 2011 to begin filming "Suits," where most people pronounce the bakery treat as scone with short "o."
