Meghan Markle's Scotland outfit proves how she's reinventing the royal dress code

Meghan Markle is reinventing the rules when it comes to the royal dress code, and her latest outing in Scotland proves just that.

Instead of stepping out in tailored coat dresses or carrying a chic clutch like Duchess Kate, the American actress is doing things her own way.

The "Suits" star made a major style statement on Tuesday when she stepped out in a Burberry tartan coat, Veronica Beard trousers and a crossbody bag by Scottish brand Strathberry for her first official visit to Scotland with Prince Harry.

Her appearance in Edinburgh marks her fifth official engagement, and it's also the fourth time she's worn trousers. If you recall, Meghan stunned and shocked fans when she wore an Alexander McQueen suit to a black-tie affair instead of a usual ball gown.

The actress' decision to carry a trendy Strathberry crossbody bag is also unheard of, with royals traditionally opting for a neat clutch. Duchess Kate is never seen without one in both of her hands during official public appearances. The reason? The Duchess of Cambridge "holds her bag in front of her in both hands when shaking hands might be awkward."

Another major way Meghan is breaking from the traditional royal dress code is with her all-black outfits. While the darker hue is usually reserved for sober events or the red carpet, Prince Harry's bride-to-be has made it her go-to look when it comes to public appearances.

The one thing missing from Meghan's Tuesday look, however, is her signature messy bun that's garnered mixed reviews. While there's no royal rule on how women should style their tresses, we've grown accustomed to Kate's picture-perfect blowouts. Despite some believing that the style isn't "appropriate," many see the hairstyle as "groundbreaking" for the royal family.

Meghan and Harry are set to tie the knot in May, and Kensington Palace recently released details of their big day. What has remained a secret, however, is what Meghan's wedding dress will look like. If her first five public appearances are any indication, we're sure it'll tastefully defy the traditional royal dress code in one way or another.
