Meghan Markle and Prince Harry break royal precedent set by Queen Elizabeth

Updated

Meghan and Harry are wild about each other!

Ever since they made their debut as a couple at the Invictus Games, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been showing their love for each other with their non-stop PDA. The affection comes in various forms, from hand holding to rubbing each other's backs.

This was made even more obvious during the appearances following their engagement announcement earlier this week. Meghan comforted a nervous-looking Harry by frequently rubbing the small of his back during their photo call and BBC interview. During their World AIDS Day outing on Friday, Meghan and Harry couldn't stop holding hands.

If you haven't noticed, the couple's PDA is a stark difference from what we've seen from Prince William and Kate Middleton. William and Kate never hold hands in public nor display any other kind of affection. Queen Elizabeth II actually set a precedent that encourages royals to keep their hands to themselves.

“While Prince Harry and Meghan holding hands is atypical for royal engagements, it is a seemingly welcomed gesture to show unity and celebration of their engagement period,” royal etiquette expert Myka Meier told People. “There is no protocol that says they can not show affection on official engagements, and this gesture makes them relatable and lovable to the public.”

The introduction of Meghan into the royal family was dubbed a "breath of fresh air" by the Financial Times. And we totally agree! Perhaps Meghan and Harry's adorable PDA will inspire Kate and William to do the same?

If Meghan and Harry's outing on Friday was any indication, Meghan-mania has officially hit the UK. The former "Suits" actress donned a look fit for a princess, wearing a Mackage navy, double-breasted wool coat, Joseph camel skirt and Kurt Geiger suede boots. She accessorized her look with a merlot-hued mini tote from Lane Crawford.
