Cory Booker suspends his campaign for president -- Did his net worth take a hit?

Updated

Cory Booker is officially out of the running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. Booker's decision to drop out leaves Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick as the only black candidate still in the running.

The New Jersey senator announced the suspension of his campaign this week in a post on Twitter. "It’s with a full heart that I share this news—I’m suspending my campaign for president," Booker emotionally wrote. "To my team, supporters, and everyone who gave me a shot—thank you. I am so proud of what we built, and I feel nothing but faith in what we can accomplish together," he continued.

Booker's announcement makes him the third contender to drop out of the race in 2020 -- and the 16th to drop his bid overall. Julián Castro and Marianne Williamson also ended their campaigns this year.

The politician got his start in government in 1998 where he served as a Member of the Newark City Council from the Central Ward until 2002. From there, he gained popularity in the city and eventually became the 36th Mayor of Newark from 2006 to 2013. Since 2013, Booker has served as a U.S. Senator from New Jersey.

According to Forbes, Booker is worth an estimated 1.5 million -- which made him the 10th richest candidate. His 2018 financial disclosure forms showed he has assets between $515,006 and $1.1 million which include royalties from his book "United" in addition to a 2,800-square-foot house in Newark, New Jersey, multiple accounts with Bank of America, a few pensions and retirement holdings with Fidelity. He currently makes $174,000 from his salary as Senator.
