Katie Couric breaks her silence on Matt Lauer 'Today' scandal: 'It's incredibly upsetting'

Katie Couric has broken her silence on former "Today" co-host Matt Lauer's bombshell firing from NBC.

Replying to a fan's comment on her latest Instagram post on Friday, the longtime "Today" anchor shared her first -- and brief -- thoughts on Lauer's firing and the sexual misconduct allegations being made against him, while teasing a more thorough response to come.

"It's incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I'm ready to," Couric wrote. "Thanks for your interest."

The comment was Couric's first on the matter since Lauer's firing over a week ago. Meredith Vieira, who filled Couric's seat next to Lauer on the "Today" show, has yet to comment on the matter publicly.

Couric co-hosted the "Today" show from 1991 until 2006 (Lauer joined her in 1997) and has returned to the show numerous times in the 11 years since she left to fill in, make appearances or just hang out with her "Today" family. She filled in for Savannah Guthrie at the beginning of 2017 when she was out on maternity leave, prompting a much-hyped on-air reunion between her and Lauer.

Since being fired on November 29, subsequent reports from Variety and The New York Times have detailed more incidents of Lauer's alleged sexual misconduct in the workplace, ranging from gifting unwanted sex toys to female staffers to summoning a woman to his office before bending her over and allegedly sexually assaulting her in 2001.

One day after his firing, Lauer released an apology on "Today."

"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions," he said. "To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed."

In the week since, Lauer and his wife, Annette Roque, have been spotted in the Hamptons without their wedding rings on. Roque's father, Henri, said in an interview with the Daily Mail that he doesn't predict that his daughter will stay with Lauer for much longer.

Sources told Page Six earlier this week that Lauer has "no intention" of returning to the spotlight after his firing and wants to just be a "regular Joe" and play golf in the Hamptons.
