Family of Kate Middleton's nurse who committed suicide speaks out 5 years later

It’s been five years since the tragic suicide of Kate Middleton’s nurse Jacintha Saldanha, and now her family is speaking out on how they’re honoring her memory.

Saldanha worked as a night nurse at London’s King Edward VII Hospital. One night she was tricked by a pair of Australian DJs impersonating Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles into revealing details about Kate’s pregnancy, when she was pregnant with Prince George.

Overcome with guilt, the 46-year-old hanged herself three days later.

Saldanha’s 20-year-old daughter and 21-year-old son along with her widower have decided to honor her memory by establishing a hospital in her hometown, Mangalore, India.

Her husband, Benedict Barboza, tells Australia’s WHO magazine, the 200-bed hospital will “take care of the poor people, the sick people from the roadsides.”

"She was the sort of person who would always go the extra mile to help a family member," her son added. "We’ve had a number of significant letters from people within the medical profession telling us just how good she was at her job."

“Learning about her was a real eye-opener and has provided the stepping stone for what we want to achieve,” he added. “Whatever I do now, any achievement, will be for her and for my dad and for my family. That is the way that I kind of live my life.”

Shortly after her death, Prince William wrote the family a letter.

"We were both very shocked to hear about Jacintha, and have been thinking a lot about her recently," Prince William wrote at the time. "Many of the nurses in the hospital spoke highly of her and I’m sure you know how great a nurse she was."

The hospital is expected to be completed in mid-2018.
