Here's the only way we'll know if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged

Updated

When Meghan Markle appeared at the Invictus Games on Saturday to support her boyfriend, Prince Harry, everyone was looking for one thing: An engagement ring.

As far as photos showed, Markle was not wearing an engagement ring. But, as we know from past royal romances, that doesn't mean that the rumors of a proposal aren't true.

According to reports published last month, Harry planned to propose to his girlfriend of just over a year during their romantic two-week getaway to Botwswana, where Harry has spent a lot of time. The sources allege that the 32-year-old wanted to propose to the "Suits" actress during the last month of summer "so that he can associate August with something joyful." (Harry's late mother, Princess Diana, died in August 20 years ago.)

But, despite the rumors and countless reports, there is no proof that the beloved pair is engaged to be married. In Markle's high-profile Vanity Fair cover story, during which she declared that they're "in love" in her first-ever public comments on their relationship, she didn't indicate that they were headed for the altar.

And, as stated above, there was no evidence of a ring when she stepped out earlier this month at the Invictus Games, sitting four rows from Harry.

So, when will we know that Harry has popped the question? People reports that the only way for us to know for sure would be via an official announcement from the palace itself. Otherwise, the only people who will know would be their very closest family and friends.

As People points out, when Prince William and Kate Middleton's engagement was announced to the public in November of 2010, it came over a month after William had actually popped the question. Not only that, but the couple had attended a friend's wedding in between the proposal and the announcement -- and Kate didn't wear her ring for the outing.

In other words, it's entirely possible that Meghan and Harry are indeed engaged, but Meghan simply took her ring off at the Invictus Games so as to keep the news between them until they're ready to make the big announcement.
