Taylor Swift's 'Look What You Made Me Do' music video: Secret references you missed!

Updated

Taylor Swift released the highly-anticipated music video for her new single, "Look What You Made Me Do," during Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards, and she still has us reeling.

The Joseph Kahn-directed clip completely stole the conversation during the high-profile award show for its endless references, apparent shade and constant outfit changes. Swift commanded attention with the music video, which will instantly be considered one of her best ever.

That being said, the video is full of imagery with secret meanings, references to past versions of Taylor Swift, and we're breaking them all down for you right here. Shout out to Taylor Swift Updates for doing some of this digging!

During the bathtub scene, there's a subtle reference to her $1 victory in her case against DJ David Mueller:

Earlier this month, Swift won her case against DJ David Mueller after she alleged that he groped her during a meet-and-greet a few years back. She sued him for $1 to make a statement, and that one dollar is lying next to her in a bathtub full of diamond jewelry.

*NOTE: People are also speculating that Swift being surrounded by diamonds in a bathroom is a reference to Kim Kardashian's infamous October 2016 Paris robbery, where she was locked in a bathroom by gun-wielding intruders who stole millions of dollars worth of jewelry from her.

In the robbery scene, Swift and her gang are robbing a streaming service:

Remember Taylor Swift's controversial, long-running feud with streaming services? Yeah, well she referenced that during the music video's robbery scene, which show's her robbing the vault of a streaming service's office. Though her insistence on holding out from putting her music on Spotify has ended, the subtle shade here was a welcome nod to her move.

*NOTE: The cat masks and the kitty cat sweatshirt could also easily be a nod to Katy Perry's fans, who cal themselves the Kitty Kats.

The names of Taylor Swift's real-life squad were written on her "You Belong With Me"-esque t-shirt:

One of the versions of "Old Taylor" that Swift dresses up as in the music video was the nerdy character from her "You Belong With Me" music video. There were random names scribbled on her t-shirt as the original incarnation of the character, but in the 2017 version, the names weren't random: They were her real-life friends! The tee features people like Gigi Hadid, Martha Hunt, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez and Lena Dunham, among many others.

All of those clones staring up at dictator Taylor? Yeah, that's her squad:

Speaking of Swift's famous friends, the star has long received criticism for the exploitation of her squad, which is made up almost exclusively of beautiful, famous, skinny, white women. Swift is well-aware of this criticism, so she played off of it in her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video by positioning herself as some sort of cult leader/dictator with an army of gorgeous clones staring up at her as their leader.

Here are all of the versions of "Old Taylor" that she reincarnated for the video:

From characters from the divisive "Shake It Off" music video to her sold out Red World Tour to the infamous 2009 VMAs, Taylor Swift took on many of her most memorable past selves in this video -- and declared them all dead.

Taylor Swift has 10 GRAMMYs and Katy Perry has, well, none:

Swift made sure to make a not-so-subtle reference to enemy Katy Perry, too. She seemingly dressed up like the star as she crashed a gold-plated car, which could be a reference to Perry's infamous gold-plated PRISM truck. The definitive reference here, though, is that after she crashed the car, Swift nonchalantly holds up one of her 10 GRAMMY awards, of which Perry famously has none of. Harsh.

Those I <3 T.S. tank tops on her dancers may as well have belonged to ex-boyfriend Tom Hiddleston:

Tom Hiddleston famously wore a "I <3 T.S." tank top while playing in the ocean with Swift and Co. during their viral Fourth of July party during the summer of 2016, and Swift outfitted her dancers in similar tank tops in her music video. Oh yeah, and you can buy them now, too.

One of the grave stones had her songwriting pseudonym on it:

Remember when it was revealed that Taylor Swift actually wrote ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris' Rihanna-assisted smash, "This Is What You Came For"? She had been initially credited under her songwriting pseudonym Nils Sjoberg, but the credit was switched to Taylor Swift once the news was made public. The music video features the nickname on a grave stone, so we're gonna guess he's dead, too.
