Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer's mother appears at the 2017 VMAs: 'Help me make Heather's death count'

Susan Bro, the mother of Charlottesville protest victim Heather Heyer, took the stage at Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards.

Bro presented the award for Best Fight Against the System and revealed that MTV had decided to award Moonpeople to all six nominees in the category. During her time at the microphone, Heyer's mother also took the time to pay tribute to her daughter, who was killed on Aug. 12 at the age of 32 after a man drove through a crowd of anti-racism protesters.

"Only 15 days ago, my daughter Heather was killed protesting racism." Bro said. "I miss her, but I know she's here tonight. I have been deeply moved to see people across the world -- the whole world -- find inspiration in her courage."

"Today, I am announcing the launch of the Heather Heyer Foundation, non-profit organization that will provide scholarships that will help more people join Heather's fight against hatred."

"Please visit our website to help me make Heather's death count," she finished. "I want people to know Heather never marched alone; she was joined by people by of every race and every background in this country."

After her presentation, Bro walked off the stage with Rev. Robert Wright Lee IV, a descendant of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, in a symbolic move that spoke to unity in the wake of the violence on Charlottesville.

The moment was just one in Susan Bro's mission to make her daughter's death count.
