Madonna shades Pepsi's controversial Kendall Jenner commercial

Madonna took to Twitter on Wednesday to shade Pepsi amid it's controversial commercial starring Kendall Jenner.

The tweet, which came the same day that the beverage company pulled the ad, shows Madonna wearing all-red at the 1999 GRAMMY Awards holding a can of Coca-Cola. To hammer her point home, she included a bonus close-up of the Coke can.

The singer's not-so-subtle Pepsi shade comes almost three decades after her own Pepsi commercial was pulled from the air in 1989. As People reported, the "Like A Prayer" hitmaker signed a $5 million contract with Pepsi in January of 1989 to endorse the soft-drink. Three months later in April of that year, though, Pepsi broke off their contract with the star after her music video for "Like A Prayer," which featured controversial religious imagery, drew ire from the public.

The company subsequently pulled Madonna's previously-released commercial from air, and 10 years later the singer made a nod to the incident by bringing a Coca-Cola onto the GRAMMYs red carpet.

Her tweet from Wednesday, which was simply captioned with a gold medal emoji, was a definite callout to Jenner's own controversial ad. The 21-year-old supermodel and Pepsi garnered immediate criticism this week for their new commercial, which saw Jenner end a "Join The Conversation" protest by simply offering a police officer a can of Pepsi. They were accused by many of trivializing the Black Lives Matter movement, among other claims.

After initially apologizing for the controversial ad, Pepsi released another statement apologizing for the tone deaf spot and even offered an apology to Jenner herself.

"Pepsi was trying to project a global a message of unity, peace and understanding," Pepsi said in a statement. "Clearly, we missed the mark, and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position."

For her part, Jenner has remained completely silent amid the scandal and fled the country to head to Paris.
