'DWTS': Val Chmerkovskiy slips in political joke after show-stopping performance with Normani Kordei

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Val Chmerkovskiy slipped in a political joke on Monday's episode of the ABC competition show that garnered him laughs from Tom Bergeron and the audience.

After delivering a show-stopping performance (which you can watch above) with partner Normani Kordei, Chmerkovskiy and the Fifth Harmony member were talking with Bergeron after their critique when the host asked Kordei where her next tour stop is.

"Where are you off to next?" Bergeron asked.

"China," Kordei responded. "Tonight!"

"We're gonna try to work out a better trade deal," Chmerkovskiy chimed in.

"That's very funny," Bergeron responded with a laugh. "The diplomats are with Erin [Andrews backstage] now."

Earlier this year, the New York Times reported that President Trump had a goal of "squelching the trade agreement" with China "to protect American jobs and businesses." It's unclear what Chmerkovskiy was actually implying with his off-the-cuff comment, but it garnered a reaction nonetheless.

The moment came after the couple delivered the highest-scoring performance of the night. Their electric cha cha garnered them a 32 from the judges, who all gave them 8's. Chmerkovskiy and Kordei had just gotten back from Japan earlier that day, where they had practiced their routine all week during Kordei's world tour with Fifth Harmony.

Monday's episode also saw the first elimination of the season, Chris Kattan and his pro partner Witney Carson. Read a full recap of the night here.
