'Beauty and the Beast' pulled from theaters in Kuwait because of 'gay moment'

Disney's live-action remake of "Beauty and the Beast" has been pulled from theaters in Kuwait over concerns around the "gay moment" in the film.

Kuwait's National Cinema Company had begun screenings of the film last Thursday before theatergoers were alerted on Monday were alerted via text message that all future screenings of the film had been cancelled.

According to the Daily Mail, the message cited "unforeseen difficulties" for the cancellations.

The move comes after international controversy surrounding what director Bill Condon called a "nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie" in which LeFou is seen holding hands with another man for less than two seconds.

"Dear customers," the Kuwait National Cinema Company tweeted. "The move 'Beauty and the beast' has been suspended pending its review. We regret any inconvenience. We will refund your bookings."

Homosexuality is not illegal in Kuwait, though prosecution under the "debauchery law" can result in up to six years of jail time for LGBTQ people in the predominantly Muslim country.

"Beauty and the Beast" saw a record-breaking opening last week in the United States. The film, which stars Emma Watson, took in $174 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, which catapulted it into the top 10 biggest film openings of all time.
