Report: Bill Paxton's stroke was caused by valve replacement surgery

Bill Paxton's fatal stroke was caused by the valve replacement surgery he underwent less than two weeks before his death on Feb. 25, TMZ reports.

According to the "Twister" actor's death certificate, he suffered an aneurysm that required corrective surgery on Feb. 14 before complications arose and he died 11 days later.

Paxton, who starred in "Training Day" and won an Emmy for his role on the mini-series "Hatfields and McCoys," is survived by his two children, James and Lydia, and his wife Louise Newbury. His family released a statement after his death on Feb. 25, just hours before the 89th Annual Academy Awards.

"It is with heavy hearts we share the news that Bill Paxton has passed away due to complications from surgery," the statement read. "A loving husband and father, Bill began his career in Hollywood working on films in the art department and went on to have an illustrious career spanning four decades as a beloved and prolific actor and filmmaker. Bill's passion for the arts was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth and tireless energy were undeniable. We ask to please respect the family's wish for privacy as they mourn the loss of their adored husband and father."

Though the Academy wasn't able to include him in the In Memoriam package, Jennifer Aniston, who introduced the segment at last month's ceremony, made sure to pay tribute to the late actor in a quick, tear-filled introduction.
