Nicole Kidman made major change to Armani gown at 2017 Oscars -- here's what really happened

Updated

Nicole Kidman got creative at the 2017 Academy Awards.

The 49-year-old actress hit the red carpet wearing a gorgeous Armani Privé gown with sequined straps that crisscrossed in the back. She showed it off in several shots in which her back is facing the camera.

Halfway into the ceremony, Keith Urban's wife was photographed backstage and she had made a major change to her gown -- the straps were now tied into a halter. The frayed ends of the straps suggest that Nicole or her stylist made the custom change to the ensemble with some scissors.

Photos of the Australian star earlier in the night showed a rash around the neckline of her dress, so it's possible the straps irritated her skin. However, photos from the "Tour Bus" segment of the show revealed what really happened.

In between hugging a female tourist and getting her hand kissed by the now-viral "Gary from Chicago," one of the straps on her gown snapped. Nicole narrowly avoided a wardrobe malfunction that would've probably been more shocking than the Best Picture snafu.

How's that for quick thinking?

Despite a surely irritating wardrobe situation, the blonde beauty wore one of the most stunning dresses of the night. She stole the spotlight from husband Keith Urban as they posed together in front of paparazzi. The duo silenced any divorce rumors with a steamy make out session on the red carpet.

While the "Lion" star didn't take home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she still made headlines during the show after the internet went wild over her awkward clapping. One Twitter user even compared her to The Grinch. Yikes!
