Updated

Ina and Jeffrey Garten have been married to each other for 48 years, and they recently opened up about the secrets to their lifelong love to PEOPLE magazine.

Most of those secrets, it turns out, are pretty darn simple. Throughout their interview, the adorable couple pointed to support for one another, encouragement and, perhaps most importantly, constant communication as keys to their relationship. "We're always connected, texting and calling each other," Ina told PEOPLE. "No matter where he is, I always know that there's nothing more important than me in his life. We give each other enormous freedom to do what we want to do, but we're still the anchor."

Constant communication is especially important for the Gartens, who actually spend the weekdays apart from one another: Jeffrey spends his weeks in New Haven, Connecticut, where he is the Dean of the Yale's Business School, and Ina stays at home in East Hampton working on her businesses.

That's why the couple described their weekends together in the Hamptons as especially "sacrosanct."

Also in the interview, Ina credits Jeffrey with really pushing her to initially pursue her Barefoot Contessa business and calls him the "first feminist" that she ever met in her life. Jeffrey, however, sees it differently.

"It was such a natural thing for her to do," he said of her taking a chance on her business many years ago. "I certainly supported her, but it was really all her. I was so proud of her. Not everybody finds something that they're so passionate about, but she clearly had."
