'Harry Potter' movies returning to Imax theaters for one week

Harry Potter is headed back to Imax.

As Warner Bros. Pictures builds buzz for its Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them release Nov. 18, Imax is bringing the Harry Potter universe back into its theaters. Imax and Warner Bros. said Monday that all eight Harry Potter films will have an exclusive one-week engagement starting Oct. 13.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which will bow Nov. 18, is being dubbed a spinoff of Warner Bros.'s hugely successful Harry Potter franchise, and marks author J.K. Rowling's return to the big screen.

The latest Imax engagement marks the first time both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will be digitally supersized for Imax screens. The Harry Potter engagement will screen in Imax's 2D format and include content from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and recorded greetings from Eddie Redmayne and the film's other talent.

Six films in the Harry Potter franchise — Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood PrinceandHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Parts 1 & 2 — have to date grossed around $216 million in Imax theaters worldwide.

"Harry Potter is one of the most beloved film franchises of all time and is incredibly important to the history of Imax," Greg Foster, CEO of Imax Entertainment and senior executive vp of Imax Corp., said in a statement.

Rowling's world of wizards is expanding elsewhere. Warner Bros. has a Fantastic Beasts sequel in the works. And a new play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two, opened recently in London to sold-out performances.

Elsewhere, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme parks at Universal Studios in Orlando, Hollywood and Osaka, Japan, are also drawing big crowds.
