Police warn residents about 'life-threatening' text message scam

Updated

A text message scam currently making the rounds in York County, Pennsylvania, is so horrifying it may result in even the savviest scam avoiders caving in.

According to WGAL, the terrifying text being sent to victims reads, "I've been paid to kill you but wish to spare you. Inform the police or anyone else you die. To be spared, contact vsdky@hotmail.com immediately via email."

The Southern York Regional Police Department is urging recipients to stay calm and simply ignore the message, no matter how counterintuitive that may seem, as they claim there's no actual weight behind the threat.

However, if you were to panic and respond to the message or email, police say the scammers would demand money in exchange for them not killing you.

... sounds like a pretty good deal to us.
