Lady Gaga's 'Perfect Illusion' makes its Hot 100 debut

Lady Gaga's new single "Perfect Illusion" debuts at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Oct. 1).

Following its first full week of tracking, "Illusion," released to radio at 11 p.m. ET Sept. 8, and shortly after to streaming and retail services, bounds onto the Digital Songs sales chart at No. 2 with 100,000 first-week downloads sold in the week ending Sept. 15, according to Nielsen Music. It also launches on the Streaming Songs chart at No. 25 with 8.3 million first-week U.S. streams. It ranks just below the Radio Songs chart with 22 million in airplay audience, in the tracking period ending Sept. 18. (All three rankings run 50 positions deep).

The lead singles from Gaga's previous two solo pop albums both logged higher entrances than "Illusion" on the Hot 100. "Applause," from ARTPOP, started at No. 6 in 2013, before peaking at No. 4, and "Born This Way," the title cut from her 2011 album, opened at No. 1, where it spent its first six weeks, marking the longest reign of her three leaders (as well as the 1,000th Hot 100 No. 1 all-time). "Applause" began with 218,000 downloads sold and "Born," 448,000 (the latter sum representing the seventh-best digital sales week for a song to that point, and the third-biggest debut).

Gaga lands her 23rd career Hot 100 entry. Of those, "Illusion" is her 14th to reach the top 15 (and the first since 2013). She first appeared on the Hot 100 dated Aug. 16, 2008, with "Just Dance" (featuring Colby O'Donis), which became her first No. 1 in January 2009. In addition to "Dance" and "Born," Gaga topped the Hot 100 with "Dance" follow-up "Poker Face" in 2009.

"Illusion" previews Gaga's new studio album, Joanne, due Oct. 21. The song has already topped the real-time Billboard + Twitter Trending 140 and Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks charts. In its second week on the Pop Songs and Adult Pop Songs airplay surveys (dated Oct. 1), and following its first full week of radio tracking, "Illusion" lifts 31-24 on Pop Songs and 32-21 on Adult Pop Songs.
