The evolution of the iPhone

The day the first iPhone went on sale, Nokia was still the top selling mobile phone company, Androids didn't exist and The BlackBerry was still the business executive's phone of choice.

iPhones quickly went from being a luxury item to everyday tool used by all ages and industries.

In less than a decade, the iPhone has come a long way from Steve Jobs' famous presentation to what's in your pocket today.

iPhone 1
June 2007


This groundbreaking piece of technology finally combined our iPod, cell phone and web browser.

The iPhone's first model had just 8GB of storage space and 320 x 480 pixel resolution.

iPhone 3G
July 2008


The iPhone 3G is actually the second generation of the iPhone. The 3G's name comes from its cellular network technology.

The 3G was the first iPhone to host the App Store.

iPhone 3GS
June 2009


Unlike the 3G, the 3GS could record video.

Its voice control functionality was a predecessor to Siri.

iPhone 4
June 2010


The iPhone 4 brought upon HD video recording with its 5MP camera.

Its high-resolution retina display was only 540 x 960 pixels.

iPhone 4S
October 2011

Unlike the iPhone 4, the 4S had an improved A5 processor.

It was the first iPhone to host Siri.

iPhone 5
September 2012


The iPhone 5 featured major design changes.

It was taller than previous models with its 9:16 aspect ratio. Its aluminum-based body was thinner and lighter.

iPhone 5S/5C
September 2013


The iPhone 5S had a larger battery, better camera, fingerprint reader and introduced iOS 7.

The 5C was a more affordable plastic-backed model to compete with the Android market.

iPhone 6
September 2014


The iPhone 6 made everything bigger.

The screen is now 4.7 inches and has a resolution of 1334 x 750.

iPhone 6S
September 2015


There are few differences between the 6 and 6S on the surface, but the 6S has 3D Touch technology not found on the 6.

The 6S also has a 12MP camera sensor, rather than the 8MP.

iPhone SE
March 2016


The iPhone SE has a smaller 4 inch screen and iOS 9.

It also has a 12MP camera and 64GB storage capability.

iPhone 7
September 2016

Tech experts expect the latest iPhone to have a redesigned headphone jack, two rear cameras and Snapchat-like functionality for iMessage.
