An NBA player beat Michael Phelps when he was 10 years old

Mike Budenholzer: Newcomer Kris Humphries Brings Physicality to Hawks

Atlanta Hawks forward Kris Humphries brings more to the table than his powerful basketball skills.

He's known for a long of things – notably, his short-lived marriage to Kim Kardashian West. But people may not know that he was once a better swimmer than Michael Phelps.

In fact, he beat the world's most decorated Olympian in a 50-fly race in 1995.

It should come as no surprise that Michael Phelps recorded the fastest time for the 100-meter butterfly that year. But Humphries recorded the fastest times in six different events that same year.

According to the Atlanta Hawks' website, Humphries won the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke, 50-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley (an event that Phelps has won at the past four Olympics).

In 2010, he said that he moved on to basketball after getting burnt out on swimming: "It's hard to stay focused on something when you have a ton of success at such a young age, so I picked up basketball a little later and rolled with that."

Just think, we could've watched Humphries in an Olympic swimming pool rather than an NBA arena.
