Sales of one beverage have reportedlyskyrocketed in 2016, becoming more popular than soda in the U.S. for the first time this year. So what are Americans chugging on these hot summer days if it's not Coca-Cola?

Bottled water.

That's right! Bottled water is now the drink of choice over typical fan-favorite carbonated beverages.

According to Bloomberg, the biggest U.S. bottled-water companies -- Nestle Waters, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc. and Dr Pepper Snapple Group -- say consumers have made the switch for both the convenience and nutritional reasons. This shift in behavior reflects America's increasing focus on health and low-calorie alternatives to soda.

Another big factor contributing to bottled water's success is its availability and portability.

Fortunately for the makers of Mountain Dew and your other favorite sugary drinks, most major soda manufacturers also produce water.

Says Bloomberg, "PepsiCo and Dr Pepper's water business grew by double digits in the first quarter of 2016, while their PepsiCo's carbonated soft-drink volume declined 2 percent."

Another big reason bottled water is picking up speed in 2016? Americans are increasingly concerned about what's coming out of the tap after recent lead contamination cases. As Bloomberg reports:

'In places like Flint, people are "often left with no option but to have bottled water," said Marc Yaggi, the director of Waterkeeper Alliance.'

However, the negative implications of the rise of bottled water is undoubtedly taking a toll on the environment. Bottled water is allegedly about 2,000 times more expensive than tap on average, and only 30 percent of the plastic bottles are recycled, the National Association for PET Container Resources estimates.
