Kanye West surprise show causes 'near riot' outside New York's Webster Hall
Chants of Pablo! Pablo! filled the night air outside of New York's Webster Hall in the wee-hours of June 5. The main event, as yet unannounced as of 1 a.m. local time: a surprise performance by Kanye West.
The rapper booked the last-minute show as a makeup for Governors Ball, which canceled its day-three lineup due to inclement weather. Rumors of a set a Hot 97 Summer Jam followed along with cryptic tweets of a to-be-announced venue. But once word started spreading of a Webster Hall gig, thousands swarmed on 11th Street in the East Village, with once observer noting "near-riot" conditions, with people on top of cars. "It's pandemonium."
While the situation is still unfolding, it appears that as of 1:20 a.m., the show is still scheduled to go on.

However, the night ended in disappointment for Kanye fans. At 1:45 a.m., Webster Hall reps confirmed there would be no gig and urged the gathered masses to head home. "There is no late show at Webster Hall tonight. Please get home safely," the venue's reps tweeted.

The action didn't stop then and there, however. West and his wife Kim Kardashian left the chaotic scenes in a car and were spotted driving nearby streets, presumably to find an alternative pop-up location for a gig. Kardashian live-streamed footage of her husband making calls to a fixer or official to locate a new venue, and shared her up-close view of the rapper as he stood in his open-top car.
