Disabled man found in filth by police after being hidden by caretaker for 7 years

A disabled man is in the hospital after police found him in a bedroom covered in his own filth. He had apparently been hidden by his caretaker for seven years in the bedroom, according to ABC12.

To make matters worse, the woman who was supposed to be taking care of him was his own sister. Investigators told ABC12 that it was one of the worst cases of abuse they had ever seen.

Police were sent to the house in Mt. Morris Township, Michigan to check on the man who hadn't been seen or heard from in years.

Mt. Morris Township Police Chief Terrance Green said:

I've never seen anyone living in this type of condition. This place is not fit for an animal.

According to Green, the officer who found the 62-year-old man described the smell as unbearable and it only got worse when they found the man in the bedroom.

The victim was covered with cockroaches and feces in a urine-soaked bed with a bewildered look on his face like, 'help me'.

The man is a General Motors retiree who had a leg injury which left him unable to walk. He relied on his sister, Pasty Marshall, and her husband, Andrew Green to take care of him. Instead, they just kept the man hidden away in the bedroom. He had no contact with anyone in the home, which included two children who lived there. His only source of outside information was a small TV in the room. The police chief explained:

They basically intentionally cut him off from the outside world.

Chief Green said the man was alert and knew what was going on, "he just didn't have movement of his legs."

Patsy Marshall and Andrew Green were arrested by police and charged with vulnerable adult abuse and unlawful imprisonment. When officers questioned the pair, the couple blamed it on the victim, according to Chief Green.

More criminal charges could be on the way for Marshall and Green. Police are investigating whether the couple was taking money from the man as well, possibly up to tens of thousands of dollars.

The man is currently in a local area hospital where is is recovering and will be transferred to an adult care facility. According to the police chief, the man told police that he would be dead if they didn't find him:

He also told the officers several times, 'thank you, thank you, thank you, you saved my life.
