3-year-old boy dies after being put in washing machine 'as punishment'

Updated

A father killed his 3-year-old son by locking him in a washing machine and letting it run for five minutes. The father was allegedly punishing his son for bad behavior.

Christophe Champenois, 37, and his wife initially told the police that their son, 3-year-old Bastien, had drowned in the bath. However, their 5-year-old daughter, who witnessed the incident with her mother, told the family doctor that her brother was put in the washing machine as a form of punishment.

Champenois allegedly locked his naked son into the machine and surfed the Internet while his son suffered inside the running machine. The boy's mother, Charlene Cotte, 29, worked on a puzzle with their daughter during the incident.

After five minutes, Champenois freed the child from the machine. He allegedly told his wife and daughter, "he won't annoy us anymore."

The boy died of multiple injuries. Champenois denies murder while Cotte denies complicity to murder in Melun, France. However, Cotte did admit to watching her husband put Bastien into the machine and turn it on.

The trial for the incident has been ongoing for four years.
