Imagine life with no humans.

One group of researchers has done exactly that -- and they even made a map to show how the world might look sans homo sapiens.

Not surprisingly, a world without human civilization would be somewhat similar to the African savanna of today.

One of the study's authors explained, "The reason that many safaris target Africa is not because the continent is naturally abnormally rich in species of mammals. Instead it reflects that it's one of the only places where human activities have not yet wiped out most of the large animals."

A previous study showed the mass extinction of many large mammals is likely attributable to the rise of modern man during and immediately after the last ice age.

Had humans never made their extinction-inducing mark on other mammals, places such as modern-day Texas, Brazil and Argentina would be hotspots for non-human fauna to flourish.

Giant sloths and ancient horses would traipse and traverse the Americas. Rhinos and elephants would walk and wander continental Europe.

The findings are not exact and likely underestimate the human impact on mammal diversity, if anything.

There's hope the data can be used to help with wildlife conservation.
