Muslims raise nearly $100,000 for burned black churches
In the aftermath of the tragic South Carolina shooting, eight black churches were burned in hateful acts of racism.
A coalition of U.S. Muslim groups wanted to help, so they decided to start a fundraiser. The "Launch Good" fundraiser began on July 2 and ends Saturday, July 18 at 3:45 a.m. The date and time is symbolic of EID, the holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan, a Muslim holy month of fasting.
As of Friday at 10 a.m., the fundraiser has raised $92,821, which exponentially surpasses their original goal of $10,000. But, after the fundraiser went viral, the group increased their goal to $100,000.
Namira Islam, executive director of the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative, said the fundraising idea came largely because of the overtly racist nature of the attacks. The Muslim community identified with the community, because both two groups face debilitating racism.
