The Reasons for a False-Negative in Your Pregnancy Test

For many women, waiting for weeks on end to find out whether or not they are pregnant can be an excruciating process. This anxiety has lead to "tweaking" -- a new trend in which women post pictures on forums of their seemingly negative tests. Then other users edit the photos using Photoshop or other programs to adjust the contrast and brightness in an attempt to enhance faint positive lines that could be invisible at first.

What's the logic behind "tweaking?"

Today's at-home tests are made to discover a hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG. "Tweaking" tries to detect tests taken at very low levels of hCG. This, in theory, would let women know a week or two sooner if they were pregnant.

But "tweaking" has its faults: editing that goes into it is highly subjective and faulty. Not only could irregularities in the dye look like a positive mark, but using the wrong tool in Photoshop could lead to a misinterpretation of the results. When the practice does correctly reveal pregnancy, women run the risk of learning about early miscarriages known as chemical pregnancies. These type of miscarriages usually remain undetected since they have no symptoms.

Women attempting to "tweak" their results should be aware the method could be wrong and that early losses are possible.

At the end of the day, it is advised that women who believe they are pregnant should visit a doctor for the most correct and secure results.
