Report: Sen. Chuck Schumer devises plan to stop Trump's wall effort

President Trump has long been talking about building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to Axios, Sen. Chuck Schumer has a plan to keep that from happening.

With the help of fellow Democratic senators, he -- like Mexico -- is reportedly going to refuse to pay for it.

The media outlet notes that passing a funding bill for the wall would require 60 votes, and Schumer is reportedly confident that there is nothing Republicans can bundle with the proposal that his party won't vote against.

There could be backlash.

As Axios, citing an inside source, notes, "the preferred strategy would be to attach the wall funding to the bill that funds the military. That way, Republicans could tell the public that Schumer and the Democrats are blocking money not only for border security but for our troops. They'll run relentless attack ads against Senate Democrats up for re-election in 2018 in states that Trump won."

Just weeks ago, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pledged that, somehow, the wall money would be secured.

In an interview with MSNBC's Greta Van Susteren on January 25, Ryan noted, "There are a lot of different ways of getting Mexico to contribute to doing this. And there are different ways of defining how, exactly they pay for it."

Mexico's president has said time and time again that his country will not pay for the wall.
