MILLY brings unexpected edge to Fall 2016 collection

Titled 'The Intimacy of Winter,' MILLY's Fall 2016 show brought dark hues, bold textures and voluminous silhouettes to New York Fashion Week.

From flouncy mini-dresses to ruffles crafted from matted wool you'd typically expect in menswear, MILLY's Fall collection was equal parts feminine and cool. Founder and designer Michelle Smith explained the role of femininity in her collection perfectly: "Winter is a time women often feel like their femininity lies dormant. I wanted to embrace what can happen underneath all those layers, the sensuality of the female form, revealed..."

The runway was dominated by black, emerald and red, in both solids and the playful prints MILLY is often known for. Aside from these hues, a metallic, hand-cut jacquard fabric and pale blue wool added unexpected touches to the otherwise dark color scheme.

But the most surprising aspect of MILLY's show at Pier 59 studios was the use of lingerie in many of the looks. "The juxtaposition creates the surprise, and in turn, the sensuality," Smith explained. From large cocoon coats draped over lacy bralettes, to a black bandeau layered over a ribbed turtleneck, MILLY brought something edgy and unexpected to NYFW.
