Drinking champagne is good for your brain, science says

In case you needed another reason to celebrate, researchers in England claim that drinking up to three glasses of champagne a week could help your brain deal with memory loss.

The University of Reading study, which went viral on Facebook recently, was actually published in 2013. It claims that not only could popping some bubbly help stop memory loss, but it could also prevent the onset of degenerative brain disorders, such as dementia and Alzheimers.

Professor Jeremy Spencer from the Department of Food and Nutritional Services at the university urged people to be responsible when taking the research's findings into account.

"We encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption, and our results suggest that a very low intake of one to two glasses a week can be effective," he said in a press release from 2013.

The specific research revolves around the phenolic compounds discovered in two kinds of grapes that are used to make champagne. The compounds found in these grapes -- pinot noir and pinot meunier -- affect brain functioning in a way that can promote learning and memory.

However, Cosmopolitan points out that the research was conducted on rats, not people, which could skew results of the study:

But until that day comes, you can still take solace in the fact that champagne has less calories than other wines and cocktails per glass.
