Ralph Lauren Spring 2016: Classic sensibility with a fresh update

Updated

By Pleats & Pearls

Ralph Lauren's Spring 2016 collection was crisp, cool, and cohesive. There was a very focused color point of view, with styles primarily in white, blue, and red. Paired with classic, cognac leather accessories, the collection managed to pull off that elusive "modern, yet timeless" aesthetic. Crisp in both silhouette and color use, most separates used structured fabrics and clean lines. Dresses were long and lean silhouettes in more drapey fabrics colored in bold blues and reds.

The show opened with a series of styles with a nautical edge. White and navy pieces layered together, paired with sailor hats for the unexpected naval theme. Next, the collection moved into a small series of bold, brightly colored patterns covering totes, jackets and dresses. A palette cleanser followed with a series of head-to-toe white looks. The collection rounded out with preppy styles paired with leather, ending with dresses.

The collection was a fresh update to Ralph Lauren's classic sensibility, pairing more traditional, timeless pieces, with updated silhouettes and fabrics. Traditional shirting was paired with high-waisted, flowing bottoms, both in full-length and cropped versions. Leather proved to be an important fabric outside of accessories, cut in cropped pants, tops, and blazers. See my top six looks from the Spring 2016 runway show - because I couldn't pick just five!
