You'll never believe what marijuana does to broken bones

Updated

A new study has found the perfect remedy for a fractured joint: smoke a joint. After studying the effects of marijuana on broken bones, researchers from Tel Aviv University have found that marijuana actually helps heal broken bones.

The study was published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research last week and suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) in marijuana significantly speeds up the healing process of bone fractures.

Sure, this research will likely lend a hand in twenty-something marijuana enthusiasts making an argument for their recreational tendencies. But more importantly, it can lead to new treatment options for people who suffer from diseases such as osteoporosis. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, the disease causes 8.9 million fractures annually.

During a press release at Tel Aviv University, one of the researchers said:

"We only respond to cannabis because we are built with intrinsic compounds and receptors that can also be activated by compounds in the cannabis plant."

Dr. Yankel Gabet of Tel Aviv's Bone Research Laboratory told the Times of Isreal:

"The clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point. While there is still a lot of work to be done to develop appropriate therapies, it is clear that it is possible to detach a clinic therapy objective from the psychoactivity of cannabis."

In case the speedy recovery wasn't enough, the study also suggests that marijuana prevents bones from breaking again. Gabet continued by saying:

"After being treated with CBD, the healed bone will be harder to break in the future. Other studies have also shown CBD to be a safe agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing."

The study gets even better. Unlike THC, CBD does not cause major psychoactivity. Therefore, you don't have to get high to receive the medical benefits of marijuana rich in CBD. This fact is especially ideal for people who require daily treatment and don't want to reap the side (or main) effects of the drug.

CBD can also be used to treat chronic pain, epilepsy, and neuropathicpain caused by Multiple Sclerosis.

This breaking study just adds to the list of benefits marijuana proves to have on people's health. Watch this video to learn about other health benefits of marijuana:
