Zendaya's new movie Challengers has received an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating following its first reviews.

Directed by Call Me By Your Name's Luca Guadagnino, the film sees the Dune and Spider-Man star take on the role of former tennis prodigy Tashi Duncan, as she tries to revive her husband Art's (Mike Faist) tennis career.

However, when he enters a Challenger event, Art faces off against his former best friend and Tashi's ex-boyfriend Patrick (Josh O'Connor).

Ahead of its cinematic release later this month, Challengers has achieved a strong 96% score on the review aggregator site (from 46 reviews) at the time of writing (April 12).

Critics have highly praised Guadagnino's "electric" directorial approach, as well as the film's "compelling" script. Here's what some of them have to say:

Variety

"The plot of Challengers might sound stale, and yet, there's an electric spark to Guagagnino's approach that elevates the material, rendering it fresh."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Smart, seductive and bristling with sexual tension, Challengers is arguably Luca Guadagnino's most purely pleasurable film to date; it's certainly his lightest and most playful."

The Times

"The mood here is unrestrained. The drama is always compelling. It is, ultimately, a grand slam masterclass."

The Daily Telegraph

"Challengers must be the most purely pleasurable film of the year so far. Like a great tennis match, it's a clash of sleekly honed bodies and minds, and the question of who finally comes out on top is irrelevant to the fun of the struggle itself."

The Independent

"It's the most gripping sports movie in years."

The Guardian

"Moment by moment, line by line and scene by scene, Challengers delivers sexiness and laughs, intrigue and resentment, and Guadagnino's signature is there in the intensity, the closeups and the music stabs."

Challengers will be released in the UK on April 26.
