On Thursday, days before the Met Gala, Zendaya’s longtime stylist, Law Roach, revealed to The New York Times that her dress hadn’t been made yet. “They won’t fit until Saturday,” he added.
As co-chair of the gala, Zendaya was one of the first to arrive this evening and unveil her head-turning look. The actress wore a custom Maison Margiela gown by John Galliano, adorned with blue and green grapes and a hummingbird on her shoulder. According to the fashion house, the dress features sage lamé and iridescent organza, as well as a hand-painted veil and hat created by Stephen Jones for Maison Margiela. Zendaya paired the gown with custom-made Tabi pumps by Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela. Her hair was styled in a low bun, letting her dark lipstick and pink, smokey eye take center stage.
Zendaya’s gown adheres to the dress code of the night, “The Garden of Time,” while simultaneously paying sartorial tribute to the Costume Institute’s exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which showcases fashion so fragile, it can no longer be worn.

Zendaya last attended the Met Gala in 2019, where she dressed like Cinderella with Roach as her fairy godmother for event’s “Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme. Her light-up ensemble was created by Tommy Hilfiger.
During her Challengers press tour in April, Zendaya shared how anxiety-inducing attending the Met Gala is. “I first went when I was 18 years old,” she told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos during her appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark. “It was such an exciting and new experience but still terrifying, you know? […] Going up the steps, it’s very daunting.”
She also addressed people’s high expectations for her red carpet appearances during her cover story interview with Vogue, published on April 9. “When I was younger there was less pressure,” she admitted. “I got to get into a zone of being that part of myself, which is definitely not a thousand percent natural. She [my red carpet persona] gets rusty.”
